ENAVE for boating and boat hire
We carry out inspections and tests further to the issuing, renewal, and authentication of the Italian safety certificate and other verification procedures required to comply with boating regulations and safety laws, i.e. boat charter and passenger transport licences and permits.
The italian safety certificate attests that craft registered with the RID (Italian Pleasure craft Registry) conform to the minimal safety standards laid down by the Italian Nautical Code Implementation Regulations.
Safety certificates for new CE-marked craft of design categories A and B must be renewed 8 years after their issue, while safety certificates for new CE-marked craft of design categories C and D must be renewed after 10 years. Subsequent renewals must be performed every 5 years, and non-CE-marked craft must be safety-checked and certified every 5 years.
Please note that safety certificates are invalidated if not renewed within 6 months, if an extraordinary event occurs, or if major modifications are made to the craft. In all such cases new safety checks need to be performed and certified.
ENAVE is authorised to certify the eligibility of your pleasure craft for the safety certificates issued and validated by the Italian Port Authorities following thorough technical assessment. You can automatically renew your safety certificates by obtaining an ENAVE eligibility certificate.
ENAVE technical assessment and certification.
Getting your safety certificate is quick and easy with ENAVE – all you need to do is get in touch by phone or by e-mail; we will organise and perform all the necessary testing and provide the eligibility certificates for you and the Port Authorities. We will also notify the Port Authorities 48 hours before in order to arrange an inspection.
Boat hire licensing.
ENAVE is able to assess the eligibility for hire of boats registered with the RID (Italian Pleasure craft Registry) in conformity to the minimal safety standards laid down by the Italian Nautical Code Implementation Regulations.
Boat hire licenses must be renewed every 3 years.
Please note that boat hire licenses must be renewed if an extraordinary event occurs, or if major modifications are made to the craft. In all such cases new checks need to be performed and certified.

Self-built pleasurecraft for personal use are not obliged to obtain CE marking. However, the amateur boatbuilder must follow certain rules in order to avoid penalties or, even worse, sequestration. It is advisable therefore to seek advice from the experts at ENAVE in the design phase – we can guide you through the process and help you compile a complete technical dossier. This is especially important for boats longer than 10 m, which require safety checks and certification, and will help to obtain CE marking at a future date.
Please note amateurs are not allowed to fit out crafts constructed by professional boatbuilders, and such vessels cannot therefore be considered as self-builds.
Before replacing a primary engine, owners of boats registered with the RID (Italian Pleasurecraft Registry) must obtain written permission from the Italian Port Authorities before they can be used again. If the weight or power of the new engine exceeds that of the old one, or the maximum allowed by the approval certificate, it is necessary to obtain CE post-construction marking whether the craft was previously CE marked or not. The only exception to this rule is non-CE marked craft in which the power of the new engine does not exceed that of the original by more than 15%. In all other cases you are advised to contact ENAVE for the relevant testing and certification.
